Gill, who died at Leahik Hospital in Honolulu after years offailing health, was 87. a Democrat, served in the U.S. House of Representativess from 1963 to 1965 and as lieutenant governor from 1966to 1970. Born in served in the territorial and Hawaii Housre of Representatives from 1958through 1962. an attorney who was a strong and earlyt supporter ofcivil rights, was amongh the most outspoken and liberal members of Hawaii’d Democratic Party as it came to dominatew state politics in the Among Democrats, Gill was known as somethinfg of an outsider, and he was an outspoken critid of what he saw as “machine-style” He ran for governor unsuccessfully twice, including against his boss, incumbent Democrat John Burns in 1970.
He also ran againsyt George Ariyoshiin 1974. Gill is survived by his Lois, and brother Lorin T. sons Eric, who heads UNITE-HERE Local 5, the hotel and restaurant workers’ union, a former Honolulu City Council member, and Tony, a labofr lawyer; and three other children, 12 grandchildrenm and three great-grandchildren.
