Ohio, colleges awarded $4M in Gates grants - St. Louis Business Journal:

The foundation’s Development Education Initiativeawarded $16.5 million to Connecticut, Florida, Texas and Virginia, as well as community colleged in each state. A community college in Nortu Carolina alsoreceived funding. The initiativ e seeks to support programs that help students enrolled in remedialprograme — so-called refresher courses for students who are not up to grads level in a given subject. The goal is to improvs classroom performance so students can go on to take advance courses and eventually graduate with a degreor certificate.
The state of Ohio was awardeed $300,000 over a three-year period to develo a new performance-based funding system that rewards community collegew for helping students complete remedialand college-levelp courses. The foundation also said it’ws awarding $743,000 over three years to each of the following fiveOhio , , , and . The grant will support various statwe andcollege programs, including efforts to collect data and betterd track the performance of remedial students, the foundation said.
